A May Must-Visit Next door To Hayne Barn Estate

If you’re staying with us at Hayne Barn Estate this May, there’s a truly special experience waiting just around the corner, the American Garden at Garden House Orchards is one of those rare places that feels like a secret worth sharing.

From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted by an extraordinary explosion of colour. Towering rhododendrons and vibrant azaleas create a spectacular natural display, with blooms in every shade imaginable. The garden feels wonderfully unspoilt—less manicured, more immersive—allowing you to experience nature in its full, unfiltered beauty.

Winding through the garden is a clearly marked woodland trail, often affectionately called the “Magical Forest” by visitors. Sunlight filters through the trees, the scent of wisteria and wild garlic fills the air, and there’s a calm, restorative atmosphere that makes it perfect for slowing down and soaking it all in. It’s an ideal outing for all ages, with paths that are generally comfortable underfoot—though do be prepared for a few steeper, uneven sections along the way.

One of the things guests love most is how accessible and welcoming it feels. The route is manageable, signage is clear from nearby Saltwood, and each visitor receives a free guide and map on arrival—adding an extra layer of insight as you explore this hidden landscape.

When to visit
The American Garden opens for its first long weekend on Friday 1st, Saturday 2nd, Sunday 3rd and Bank Holiday Monday 4th May, from 2pm to 5:30pm. After that, it will be open every Friday, weekend and Bank Holiday throughout May, making it an easy and flexible addition to your stay at Hayne Barn Estate.

Admission is £7.50 for adults, with children visiting free, offering excellent value for such a unique experience. Please note that dogs and picnics are not permitted, helping preserve the tranquillity and beauty of the gardens.

After your walk, there’s nothing better than a well-earned pause at the charming pavilion. Set on a lawned area, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a slice of homemade cake and a good cup of coffee—simple pleasures done well.

For those feeling inspired, there’s often the opportunity to purchase rhododendrons and azaleas, so you can take a little piece of the garden home with you.
